Chapter 8

It was dark. Ryan got out of the limousine and shivered. The rain had stopped but the wind was blowing, howling around the ancient stone ruins. “It’s creepy up here,” he said. The private jet sat waiting with Harrison inside of it but other than the group he was with, no one was around. An arm came down across his shoulders and he jumped a little, startled, until he realized it was Alexander.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t park any closer,” Rinaldo apologized. “The ground is soft. We’ll have to follow the path and go over the bridge.”

“Does anyone have a light?” Alex asked. His voice was barely audible in the strong wind.

“I didn’t think to bring one,” Jeremiah said.

Frank and Luigi shook their heads.

The jet’s engines started and began to roar. A strong light appeared through the fog.

“Well, Harrison has seen us,” Alexander said, smiling. “Shall we go?”

The group made the trek through the fog, walking on the damp earth as a few remaining drops of rain fell from the night sky.

Ryan noticed the heaviness of Alexander’s arm. He was leaning on him for support. “Are you all right, Master?”

“I’ll be fine when we’re on the jet,” he said. “Don’t worry. Nothing can stop us now, hmm?”

The door to the jet opened and the steps came down.

“What was this place?” Brandon asked, looking around. The tall stone walls loomed against the darkness seemingly threatening to fall on them.

“It is the site of an ancient war,” Frank told him. “Many were held prisoner here. They were freed and told they could leave but a Commander who lost 12,000 men arrived and broke his word, killing them all. He had the man who led them whipped and he cut off his head, placing it on a stick right over there.”

Brandon huddled closer to Jeremiah and walked beside him. “I don’t like this place.”

“We’re almost there. Keep walking,” Jeremiah said. “There’s nothing here to hurt us.”

“A few ghosts maybe,” Ryan said.

“Shh…” Alexander said, hushing him. “Come on. Go up the steps.”

“You should go first,” Ryan told him.

“Go. Everyone, get on board,” Alexander said. He held onto the rail and watched over the group as they went up the stairs and into the jet. Finally, when everyone was inside the jet and safe, he made the climb. Harrison met him at the top. “Can you take off in this horrid weather?” Alex asked.

“Yes. Please, sit down and relax,” Harrison said. “I see you’ve picked up a few more travelers.”

“Their names are Frank and Luigi. They’re Rinaldo’s parents.”

“Parents?”

“Well, not officially. They’ve been together for fifty years,” Alexander said, smiling. “They want to get married so I invited them to come along.”

“That’s sweet,” Harrison said, placing his hand on Alexander’s back. He removed it when the man cringed. The palm of his hand was marked with blood. “Good heavens Alex!”

“Marini was a bastard,” Alexander muttered. “I’ll be fine.”

“Ryan,” Harrison said, “Come and help him to the cabin in the back where he can lie down.”

“I’m all right.
